BSidesTLV 2023 CTF Summary explores Guy Barnhart Magen.

Summary

Guy Barnhart-Magen, one of the originators of the conference's Capture the Flag competition since 2000, announces the results and statistics from this year's CTF event while filling in for regular CTF leaders Thomas Zeit and Emerald Levy.

The 2025 CTF featured over 27 challenges organized across eight categories including reverse engineering, mobile security (offered for the first time), and cryptography. Registration statistics show approximately 1,400,000 users registered across different teams with 21,000 distinct IP addresses (attributed to bot activity or VPN usage), and 933 officially registered teams. The competition recorded 400,544 solved challenges across participating teams, with 162 teams successfully solving at least one challenge, indicating genuine active participation.

Challenge difficulty varied significantly. The easiest challenges were City Key (solved by 92 teams), Pacino (74 solves), and Breaking the Vault (71 solves). Conversely, the hardest challenges—Shield and Leaking Brother—were each solved by only a single participant, demonstrating substantial difficulty scaling.

A major milestone this year was the introduction of mobile security challenges powered by Corellium, a sponsor providing infrastructure for mobile device testing. For the first time, the CTF included real mobile device emulations running vulnerable applications, allowing participants to engage with actual mobile security scenarios.

Honors and recognition were given to top-performing teams. The EPT team led the overall leaderboard with over 8,000 points, and the SNHD team achieved over 5,000 points. However, only on-site community members could win prizes. The official winners were: third place—Yoni; second place—Camel Riders with 2,487 points; and first place—AX10 with 4,419 points. Winning teams were instructed to contact CTF organizers to discuss prize distribution.

Barnhart-Magen thanked the CTF team and volunteers who contributed to the competition's success and expressed hope for continued participation in future years. The presentation encountered technical difficulties with slide display but proceeded with the announcements.
